Peter visits a local school during UK Parliament Week
UK Parliament Week is a UK-wide festival which takes place during a week in November aiming to engage people, especially young people, from different backgrounds and communities, with the UK Parliament and empower them to get involved.
UK Parliament Week is part of the UK Parliament’s Vote 100 programme, celebrating equal voting rights and other milestones in the UK’s democratic history. A record high of 32% women MPs were elected to the House of Commons in 2017’s General Election. There is further to go in encouraging diversity; UK Parliament invites people of all backgrounds to have a say in their democracy.
Peter Dowd MP said: “It was great to spend the morning at The Grange Primary School, I thank the school for their involvement in celebrating UK Parliament Week and giving me the opportunity to speak and take questions from the pupils about the role of a Member of Parliament. We can only continue to create a fairer, more equal society by having a greater participation in the democratic process which is why it’s important we have celebration events like UK Parliament Week so the young people of today can take part and have a better understanding and the importance of participating in our democratic system growing up.”
This year’s UK Parliament Week festival was the largest ever, seeing more than 7,000 registered events with over 500,000 people taking part. Participating organisations include Scouts, Schools, Girl Guides, and the British Youth Council.
