SEPTEMBER IS BLOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
The six most common symptoms of Blood Cancer are, Fatigue, Repeated Infections, Feeling weak or Breathless, Fever, Bruising,Joint or Bone Pain. These symptoms are common to many other conditions and diseases.
A lot of GPs will only see just one case of Blood Cancer every 2 or 3 years so don’t think Blood Cancer on the first visit. Nationally more people are diagnosed with Blood Cancer in A&E after presenting with an unrelated problem.
As part of September being “BLOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH” the StemCellScousers held a fundraising and Awareness event in aid of the Anthony Nolan Stem Cell Donor Register Charity at Tesco’s Hawthorne Road Litherland where members of the public came along to find out more information on Stem Cell Donation. The result was 34 New potential Stem Cell Donors pledged to sign up on line to the Anthony Nolan Donor Register. And a Massive £613.98 was donated by the very generous staff and customers of Tesco which will enable Anthony Nolan to sign up another 15 New Donors to the register.
The StemCellScousers were honoured to have, and wish to thank The Mayor of Sefton Councillor June Burns, the local MP for Bootle Peter Dowd and Ford Ward Councillor Ian Moncur for attending and supporting the event.
Peter Dowd MP said “I commend Anthony Nolan for the work it does in conducting vital research and supporting people with this disease. I believe we should set an ambition for the NHS to have the best cancer survival rates in Europe. Key to this will be improving early diagnosis and public awareness, which is why I was happy to attend last weeks awareness day to support the volunteers efforts in raising awareness and vital funds for the charity.”
Derek Kelly the Community Champion at Tesco’s Hawthorne Road said “We at Tesco were honoured to be involved in what proved to be am excellent fundraiser. Tesco Litherland and all their staff realised what a remarkable cause Anthony Nolan is, and such a dedicated group of volunteers led by the inspirational Kevin Dunne. Well Done to all the singers and musicians who left a lasting impression on all our colleagues and particularly our customers. Thank you Anthony Nolan & the StemCellScousers”
If you are 16 - 30yrs and in good general health you can register online at www.anthonynolan.org it only takes two minutes and your Swab kit will be posted out, but please remember to post it back to Anthony Nolan when you have completed your mouth swabs.
