Windrush

Unfortunately, many members of the Windrush generation were left facing uncertainty about their legal status in the UK and lost access to their homes, jobs and healthcare. British citizens were treated shamefully after a lifetime of working hard, paying their taxes, bringing up their families and contributing to our society.

In June 2018, the Government announced that the Windrush Lessons Learned review would consider how members of the Windrush generation were entangled in measures designed for illegal immigrants, why that was not spotted sooner, and whether corrective measures are now in place.

The Government said recently that the Home Secretary has not yet received the final report from the independent reviewer Wendy Williams and that on receipt, it will be published as soon as practicable.

What the Windrush scandal teaches us is that people can be deprived of their rights, either by the pressure put on Home Office officials by the “hostile environment” policy, or even a simple mistake.

I would like to see a publication date set out for the long-awaited Windrush Lessons Learned report. I also believe that all charter flight deportations should be halted until this review has been published, and its recommendations implemented.

I am committed to working to end the injustices of the Windrush scandal and to press for fair compensation
for those who have unfairly suffered. I also support the establishment of a humane immigration system and an end to the hostile environment that caused the Windrush scandal of British citizens being deported.

I will continue to press for justice for the Windrush generation.
